Klamath Kids Get a Head Start

City: Klamath Falls, OR

Business Oregon's Infrastructure Finance Authority provided the Klamath Family Head Start $800,000 from the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds to help with the purchase of a facility that will allow them to expand services and undertake future development. Klamath Family Head Start leased the facility, a two-acre property with an existing 17,000-square-foot building, before the decision was made to purchase. The Klamath program serves 411 children ages three to five for three and a half hours per day, as well as a qualifying group of children for six and a half to eight hours per day. Most of the children come from families with moderate to low incomes.

The building was originally constructed to operate as a lumber yard, but most recently it was configured as an office building and includes a one-acre, fenced area. As tenants, a portion of the building was remodeled to include six classrooms, a commercial kitchen, office space for administration, a resource room, teachers' offices, conference space, storage space and a large outdoor playground.

Program officials said that purchasing the property is projected to increase the number of children who can be served by 6 percent, lower the costs of utilities and maintenance per square foot by a third, meal costs are expected to drop by 5-10 percent, fuel consumption is expected to fall and rental expense will be eliminated.
